Gutter Installation in Mt Ulla NC: Fall Gutter Guide

Gutter Installation in Mt Ulla NC: Fall Gutter Guide
October 13, 2026 3 min readBy CER Roofing

Leaf drop in Rowan County starts late September and runs into November. Before that, your gutters get one more test from hurricane remnant rain moving up from the coast. We see the same thing every fall in Mt Ulla. Water goes over the edge, soaks the fascia, and finds its way into the soffit. By the time a homeowner notices the stain inside, the wood outside has been wet for months. A twenty minute check right now saves that.

What September Does to Gutters in Mt Ulla

Two problems show up this month. The first is volume. A summer storm can drop more water in ten minutes than a 5 inch gutter can carry, especially on a long roof plane with open land around it. The second is debris. Pine needles and oak leaves pack the trough and block the downspout outlet, so water backs up under the shingles at the eave. On the roof replacement we finished in the Mazeppa community of Mt Ulla on September 4, 2026, new drip edge went in at the eave for that reason. Drip edge sends runoff into the gutter instead of behind it.

Check These Five Things This Week

  • ▸Look for water lines or streaks on the outside face of the gutter after a storm. That is overflow.
  • ▸Check the fascia board behind the gutter for soft spots and peeling paint.
  • ▸Watch where the downspouts end. Water should leave the foundation, not pool beside it.
  • ▸Look at the seams. Old sectional gutters leak at every joint, and sealant only buys a season.
  • ▸From the ground, make sure the gutter still sits tight to the fascia with no sag between hangers.

When Gutter Repair Is Enough and When It Is Not

Gutter repair makes sense when the run is sound and the problem is local. A loose hanger, one bad seam, a downspout that came apart, a section knocked out of pitch by a limb. We fix those every week. Gutter replacement is the honest answer when the trough is rusted through, when the seams have been sealed twice already, or when the size was wrong from the start. Putting new hangers on a gutter that is too small for the roof above it does not solve anything. We will tell you which one you are looking at before you spend money.

Seamless Gutters, 6 Inch Trough, and Gutter Guards

Seamless gutters are rolled on site to the exact length of your run, so the only joints are at the corners and the outlets. That is where most leaks start, and it is why we do it this way. On larger roofs we recommend 6 inch gutters with 3 by 4 downspouts. The extra capacity matters more out here than it does in a subdivision with short roof lines. Gutter guards are worth the money if you have pines or hardwoods close to the house. They are not magic, but they turn a two ladder job every fall into a rinse every few years.
