September is the month a roof tells on itself in Rowan County. The shingles have been cooked all summer. Hurricane remnants have pushed wind across open farmland with very little to slow it down. Then the leaves drop and the gutters fill. If you only look hard at your roof once a year, this is the week to do it. Most of what follows you can do from the ground in about ten minutes.

A fall roof check you can do this week

• ▸Shingles that lift, curl, or sit crooked, especially along the edges and the ridge
• ▸Dark patches or streaks where two roof planes meet in a valley
• ▸Shingle grit piled at the bottom of the downspouts, which means the surface is wearing off
• ▸Rusted or missing drip edge along the eaves
• ▸Pipe boots, nail heads, or flashing that look dried out or split
• ▸Ceiling stains inside, especially in a hallway or a closet on an exterior wall

Clean the gutters before the leaves drop

Clean the gutters before leaf drop, not after. A gutter packed with wet leaves holds water against the fascia and the edge of the deck. That is how sheathing rots from the outside in, and it is the part most homeowners never see until a roofing contractor pulls the shingles off. While you are up there, look at the first three feet of roof above the gutter. That edge takes the most water and shows wear first.

Storm damage and claim deadlines

Summer storms in Iredell and Rowan County do quiet damage. Wind lifts a shingle, sets it back down, and breaks the seal underneath. It looks fine from the driveway and leaks in January. Insurance carriers also put a time limit on storm claims, so a roof hit in July is worth documenting now instead of next spring.
